In competitions, solvers are presented with a table which has on it a Stackmat and a Mat (which are both shown below); These are used to time the attempt accurately. The Rubik's cube in which the solver hands in to use will be under a cube cover to conceal the scramble until it is inspection time. The surface also must be flat and level. All of these are highly regulated in official competitions, along with many more rules to do with (for example): what counts as solved, how your puzzle looks, consent to compete and even clothing of the competitors.
