Rubik's cubes were invented in 1974 by a Hungarian named Ernö Rubik and popularised in 1980 via the mainstream toy manufacturer Ideal Toy Corp, and it was at its height of mainstream popularity throughout the entirety of the 1980s. However, recently the amount of followers of the puzzle trend have been rising.

There are competitions colloquially called 'cubing competitions' under the WCA (World Cubing Association) which have different regulations around the world, but they are more or less all structured in the same way:

  • Competitors are separated into groups based on names, registration date/time, randomly, or speed.
  • The competitors are called up one group at a time.
  • The competitors hand in a puzzle to be scrambled.
  • The competitors receive their cubes and have 15 seconds to inspect it before solving.
  • The quickest solvers of each group move up into the next round until all rounds have been completed and one competitor is left.

In my personal experience, I have found that under pressure I can't perform very well with a Rubik's cube; I have split this down into 2 fundamental reasons: For one, when I'm under pressure my hands sweat and tense up, this slows down my tps (turns per second) and it makes me worry about dropping the cube or slipping on it; And the second reason is down to trying to be as quick as possible and rushing. I truly believe that this makes world record solves so much more impressive, especially in higher heats of tournaments, where there are crowds of spectators around the solvers.

I've tried to include scientific research, but it's not a scientific matter... I've developed a group of speedcubers I watch... Explain why

The trend

Solving Rubik's Cubes has become a trend... It also involves other 'twisty puzzles', which are... in the WCA's guidelines and can be solved in competitions.
